Perimenopause + Menopause
Many women experience pelvic floor concerns later in life or related to the onset of perimenopause or menopause.
Perimenopause is the transition phase that leads to menopause. This typically begins in a woman’s late 40’s and can last several years. This transitional phase brings fluctuating hormone levels and irregular cycles. It can also create a new onset of urinary leakage, urinary urgency and/or frequency, increased pelvic pressure, painful intercourse, or constipation.
Why does this happen? During this transitional life phase, estrogen levels decrease. Estrogen helps to keep the pelvic muscles and tissues elastic, thick, and with good blood supply. With a decrease in your body’s estrogen, combined with the natural aging of muscles, we can see an onset of new bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunctions.
Treating these conditions often requires a multidisciplinary team approach which may include your gynecologist or primary care doctor in addition to your pelvic floor physical therapist.
While not all pelvic floor symptoms surrounding perimenopause and menopause are rooted in pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, many are and respond well to an individualized treatment plan.
